United we Stand, Divided we Fall: Where Loyalties lie

The Archaic Period proceeded the Classical Period in 800-490 BC. From this age emerged a concept known as polis, politically independent cit-states and with it, citizenships. (Only free men were eligible for citizenships and they were highly competitive--"Greek cultural values depended on the spirit of male competition".) It gave rise to such terms like "Athenians" and "Spartans". Not only were men competitive amongst themselves, states were often locked in power struggles.

Even though the men's first loyalty is to their city, their second is to their country. Only when Greece was threatened as a whole did the states cooperate with one another. A prime example being the Persian invasion. Athens and Sparta had put aside their differences and demolished the Persian army that had previously conquered Mesopotamia, Egypt, Russia and Greek colonies along Asia Minor. The fact that the Persians were trained warriors whereas the Greek army was made of any able men who could afford armour made the victory that much more impressive. These men were driven by something far more destructive than the Persian's thirst for colonization; they were driven by loyalty and, from the recent establishment of democracy, freedom.

The canon does not say explicity, but the fact that Endymion is always shown to be in armour suggests that Earth was a planet in constant war; thus, the notion of civil war in fandom, perhaps. Against the threat of the Moon, people of Earth banded together motivated by what they thought was loyalty to their prince, their planet and freedom (recall how Kunzite believed that the Moon was always monitoring them when Endyion asked why they were fighting--volumn 2 repinted, act 10). It explains the shitennou's looks of terror when Endymion is struck down; they were not brainwashed (at least not in that lifetime), their emotions were manipulated. There isn't anything quite as noble and enpowering as freedom and choice.

Queen Serenity, however, says that Metaria "manipulated people using the darkness in the depths of their hearts" (volumn 2 repinted, act 10). I like to entertain the thought that because people chose to follow Endymion, appealing to their emotions makes them stronger than surpressing their thoughts and brainwashing them. Mindset and actions are then working together instead against each other. It's a more much romantic and powerful notion. (See the ending scene of "Braveheart" 1995)

Now the Moon isn't exactly the Persian army hoping to conquer Earth, but suppose Earth takes a smooth victory. If they follow the footsteps of the Ancient Greeks, truce between the individual regions are temporary. The warring nations will eventually lead to an event so grand from which they never recover. In the case of Greece, the 27 years Peloponnesian War was fought between its two greatest power centers: Athens and Sparta. Large scale atrocities resulted in widespread poverty and cultural devastation; it marked the end of the Classical Period.

The Undeserving: Gods

You can't talk about Greece and not mention the divine figures that dominated its culture and religion and dictated their way of life. Greek gods were anthropomorphic--they looked and acted like human beings complete with passion, lust, ambition, hate and all those other emotions associated with people. Similar to how the gods' domain of control sometimes overlapped with one another, Endymion's gifts dip into many gods.

  • Beginning with Zeus, father of gods and mortal. Zeus is known equally for his thunderbolts as he is for his love affairs. While I can see Endymion having a few outrageous rendezvous with women before he met Serenity, Mamoru can be nothing but loyal. It's ironic then, at least to us (recall that women were immaterial in Greek society), that the sky god should preside over law and justice. But similarly, as the crowned prince, the responsibility is his to keep order in the world as a whole. Independant kingdoms may exist, and they will have their own laws, but he controls the empire of Earth.

  • Apollo, though called sun god by Homer, has no real association with the star although he is patron to many things: prophecy/truth, archery, medicine/healing and disease, music, pasture, and horses, his associated animal (Pegasus, anyone?). Mamoru exhibits a talent in healing and prophecy through psychometry. It's interesting to note that not only is Mamoru connected to Earth, he is also mentioned to be protected by the sun; he gives off "the light of the sun."

    • Helius/Helios is also a sun god, brother to Selene. He is the god that pulls the sun across the sky in his chariot. In the Sailor Moon universe, Mamoru's guardian priest takes his name.

  • Prometheus, commonly known as the fire bringer. According the poet Hesoid, gave and taught man everything they knew including brickmaking, woodworking, dates, numbers, writing, astronomy, animal husbandry, seafaring, medicine, prophecy... essentially civilization, and of course, fire. Now I'm not saying Endymion was responsible for any of that on Earth. The most well known story of this second generation titan was "Prometheus Bound". Prometheus is punished for stealing fire from the heavens for mankind. He is bound to a rock and subjected to the wrath of nature at a mountain where he never sees his beloved mortals. A giant eagle comes to feast at his liver everyday which regenerates every night because of his immortality. Despite this, he stands defiant and proud against anything Zeus throws at him. Endymion's stance with the moon and Mamoru's struggle against Beryl's brainwashing (in the anime) reflects this same sort of iron will and stubborness especially in the case with Mamoru. I don't suggest for a second that the Beryl-Mamoru-Usagi is the same as the Zeus-Prometheus-Mortal dynamics, but our heroes selfless; even though they suffer unjust consequences, they don't regret what they've done, and they are ready to bear the full responsibility. (Prometheus also has a touch of arrogance and confidence to help. I plan on elaborating that in separate article.)

Note: Etymologically, Endymion comes from "endyein" which simply means "to dive". Endymion himself and his story with Selene (= "moon") was not a particularly influential or important story in Ancient Greece. The goddess Selene falls in love with the sheppard Endymion, asks Zeus to make him a sleeping immortal, and bears him 50 daughters. Interpreting the tale allegorically, it becomes a primitive attempt to explain sun set and moon rise.

----------------

With that, concludes my epic mythology article. I've tried my best to lay out similiarities and differences, and speculation, fandom and canon. What you take from this is up to you. Some of these ideas are good to think about, though, unfortunately our ancient world does not map seemlessly into the Sailor Moon universe. I could have been selective in my data, but I thought it was important to point out the holes in the theory as well. I found some of the cultural quirks to be absolutely fascinating, and it helps justify some of the things that I enjoy in fandom that's dismissed so easily. I also hope it provides a perch for new perspectives into a character that has so much to offer.

Plans:
- Go over and refine some points in light of your responses.
- Cite sources and add visuals.

Awesome job. I think this second part is a lot clearer in its format than the other one, perhaps because you have less material to cover all at once. I really like how it goes into the united/divided aspects of Earth, as well as drawing up parallels between Endymion and the different gods.

Thank you <3

It was definitely a lot easier to organize my thoughts. The material was much more clean cut with its boundaries. I will have to go back to the first part and somehow make the thoughts flow better.

------------------------

In my haste to flush everything out of my system, I forgot about Dionysus:

Finally, I would like to point out the similarities between Dionysus and Endymion/Mamoru. Dionysus has a rich background that somewhat irrelevent but important at the same time. He's about letting loose via vine, ecstasy and very often insanity, seemingly a complete opposite to our reserved and controlled Mamoru. Although Mamoru does have a few mental issues to iron out himself... Dionysus complements Detemer as the male fertility god*, but because of his descent into Underworld to save his mother and his death and rebirth when he was a fetus, he also became associated with death and resurrection. Our dear Mamoru has had a few encounters with Hades himself. First is his reincarnation as Mamoru. He is then killed by Kunzite and brought back to life as Endou from which came the rebirth of Mamoru. And in Sailor Stars, he dies at the hands of Galaxia and is resurrected at the end. We know Demeter for bringing a bountiful harvest--the dry side of life. Dionysus represents the "juice" of life including wine, blood, milk, semen and water. For those familar with Final Fantasy VII, the life force/life stream of the planet is depicted as a liquid. It's a lovely coincidence that 70% of Earth is made of water, babies feed on milk, people need blood and Mamoru lends his life force to Chibi-Usa to sustain her as though it's a physical life line to be tossed out.

There's also a rather eerie side of Dionysus. He brings madness and destruction to those who resist him but also those who favour him. These consequences involves doing terrible things to your loved ones (e.g. mother boiling her child alive and eating it.) => Mamoru fearing he's a burder to Usagi and eventually giving his curse to her in the SuperS arc as well. But like Dionysus, with destruction brings new life. e.g. unsealing the golden crystal and realizing his dream is to protect Earth with Usagi.

* Usagi notes in the SuperS saga that power cannot be created nor used alone which is followed by sparkly magic and a coronation XD

Haha, I debated with myself for a good minute over whether to go "what about Dionysus?" but in the end trusted that I was the only dork who saw a connection there. I think that the connection is cemented by the two shrine maidens in Elysian being known as Maenads, who, along with Satyrs, were followers of Dionysus (I've always wanted to write a fic delving into that fascinating tidbit...).

It's interesting to think that Mamoru is a representation of Earth, when Earth figures such as Dionysus are all about pleasure and emotion and sensuality. If I recall in my classes, across cultures the Earth is traditionally portrayed as female, with a complimentary male sky god. In a way, Serenity and Endymion represent a complete inversion of the usual sky/earth dichotomy. Which is another reason why I like to view them as equals in power, because this dichotomy represents balance and opposition.

Haha, I'm a huge dork myself. I still get teased for having a rock collection and getting my Mamo plush custom made.
^^; I completely forgot about the shrine maidens!

It should also be noted that while all the other gods are detached and in the sky, Dionysus is known as "the god who comes"; he is always portrayed as on Earth in his religious cult.

The sky/earth complement is a recurring theme in all the divine myths beginning with Ki/An in Sumer to Gaea/Uranus, Rhea/Chronus and finally Hera/Zeus in Greece. One of the things we talked about in class was structuralism as a school of thought that saw myths as an attempt to reconcile these polar opposites. E.g. Dionysus bridging the gap between life and death, civilization moving to Earth and the union of Usagi and Mamoru => Chibi-Usa.

Haha, I wish I had a rock collection. I always planned on getting a set of the four stones.

Yes, the detached nature of the sky god is another thing that distinguishes Mamoru. I think that as a ruler, he wouldn't be the distant patriarch, but the close and intimate kind of king who likes to be among his people.

Unfortunately, I think Naoko botched the "Chibi Usa as bridge between worlds" potential, because she's all Usagi and very little Mamoru. Sure, she's got his smarts, but none of his temperament, and everything from her name to her hair suggests that she's just a small clone of Usagi. I'm not a Chibi Usa hater, but I do dislike that Mamoru seems to have lost out again in that area.

The Canadian dollar has matched the US, and there are some fabulous cuts on eBay =)

It's true that Mamoru got shafted again, but I like to think Chibi-usa's attachment to Mamoru sort of compensates for it a little. In time, she'll inherit some traits unique to him. Her maturity is definitely reminiscent of her father (then again, she was about 900 when she traveled back in time). Another way to look at it would be to think that Mamoru would have been a little more like her had he known what it was like to be adored from families and friends right off the bat.

If all else fails, I always liked the idea that the Neo monarchs had more childre, and that there'll be a mini-Mamoru running about in that palace.

This is true. I'd like to think that as she ages, Chibi Usa gets to be a little more Mamoru-like.

I've always liked that idea, too. I've long had this silly notion that Kousagi of Parallel Sailor Moon was more than just a cracked-out whim of Naoko's. Which leads to another silly idea: a tiny little sailor senshi with a top hat and cane. XD

XD! That's conjures up such an adorable image! I was thinking along the lines of a little boy, but that seems so much more fun. Maybe she'll be the one to tell Mamoru what a silly idea it is to have top hat on the account that it's too big for her and drops down like a paper bag.

I masquerade as an artist but I would so fail ;_;
I've been staring at this fanart on my hard drive for days.

Might want to get zoisite instead of tanzanite, though. Tanzanite is extremely expensive.

It didn't used to be, but it's starting to be now, thanks to Tiffany's new campaign to increase its status.

I think Prince Endymion was just drawn in armor to look dashing :p

Didn't Princess Serenity say that Earth was united as one kingdom or something? Maybe I'm just imagining things.

I have this own version (pure fanon) in my head where the various "houses" under Endymion's house were always at war, so Endymion's family has to rule with an iron fist. They put an emphasis on military and strictness, but Endymion is peaceful and doesn't really fit in. Eh, but I don't know if it contradicts canon, so...

Dashing it my be, I like to think their attire serves practical functions as well.

Not that I recall.

The structure and the government of the Golden Kingdom were never mention, but admittedly it's been a long time since I've read the manga in its entirety.
